Shown are the ball for the universal joint, and the cutter arbor with draw bar.
The ball is only 3/16 inches in diameter. The .062" hole perpendicular to the the stock is drilled, then the stcok is placed in the lathe and the hole on axis center is drilled, now a ball radius is done on the end of the stock and then another partial
radius done leaving about .010" thick shafting. Very fine cuts are required and all goes well you have a pecfect ball with four holes in it. Material is C/S for the ball. Yes, you could just take the temper out of a ball bearing and drill it, but then, it wouldn't have been an interesting piece to make.
