Title: M1 MILLING MODEL
Post by: RICH on December 06, 2009, 07:55:55 PM
Hi All,
Here are some pictures of a model I am currently working on. Started it a year ago and figured it's time to get her done.
All the the shafts and threads were done on the cnc lathe. Another 24 hours and it should be done.

Just a few more close up pictures of the handle, feed clutch assembly, universal joint ( still need to make another set as they are a different size), and some parts in the making. The ball for the universal joint was cnc'd on the lathe. I attached a picture of the cutter used to cut the slots in the bed. Some things just need to be made.

Shown are the ball for the universal joint, and the cutter arbor with draw bar.
The ball is only 3/16 inches in diameter. The .062" hole perpendicular to the the stock is drilled, then the stcok is placed in the lathe and the hole on axis center is drilled, now a ball radius is done on the end of the stock and then another partial
radius done leaving about .010" thick shafting. Very fine cuts are required and all goes well you have a pecfect ball with four holes in it. Material is C/S for the ball. Yes, you could just take the temper out of a ball bearing and drill it, but then, it wouldn't have been an interesting piece to make.  ;)

Wow Rich, that looks great. Certainly a labor of love I would think. Maybe you can have it done in time to have a small Santa running it under the tree? Can you imagine how many years it will be admired and loved? That is great!

Brett,
An Elf may be more appropriate for running it since Santa is just a supervisor.  ;D
Hope to have it done by Christmas.

The next model will take some time but should be more interesting. The project is going to be a
scaled down version of a Coonan 357 Mag or model 629 S&W 44 mag.  Not sure how small you can go and still
maintain functionality. I can get diverted rather quickly.   :D

Rich, that does look great. Did you do the castings yourself, and what is the material?
Have you seen the miniture machine shop set-up at the Henry Ford Museum? Yours would fit right in.

I partial to the 629 (Go ahead, make my day, Punk!) 8)

Jammerm,
The castings come as part of the kit when purchased and is Al. Frankly, I think if they sold the plans, it would be easier to make a lot of the parts out of a chunk of metal.
Never saw the miniture machine shop at the Henry Ford Museum. Go to some of the shows and you see a lot of them though.

Yep, i also am partial to the 44's and good grief had a bunch of them at one time until i decided i couldn't use them all at once. The burgler did me a favor!

I'll take a look at how much it can be scaled down before it won't be functional ( parts just become to fragile ) and was thinking  around 1/4 or 1/5 size or so.

Panaceabeachbum has a show and tell post of some of the scaled firearms he has done. He might be a wealth of knowledge if you have any questions, Rich. Some of his stuff is  :o  :o  :o  :o

Sam,
Thanks for the info, forgot about his thread and they do some realy good stuff. Most of it is not miniture though.
Another project option would be a small surveyors theodolite,  i started one, but.......working optics, good grief.........

Looks like i made this years task since the model join's the other ones in a case.
Just a few minor pieces to be made.

They look so beautiful. It's so tempting to touch them and rotate the handwheels :)

Daniel

P.S.
Do the cases come with the kits?
Title: Re: M1 MILLING MODEL
Post by: RICH on December 11, 2009, 11:06:52 AM
No the cases were purchased. I happen to come across a sale on them and bought six cases.
Don't know if I'll ever fill them all.

Sizing up the next project. This one is going to take some time over time ( won't be done in the next year ). I will quess that it will take 200 hours for the proto type. The scale dosen't seem too bad.

Lettering will be around .020" high. This is were CNC is realy going to come into play even though there will be a lot of hand work required. Will be using the engraving machine to do a lot of the work as it is a very accurate
machine and i can hold close tolerances. Hopefull won't have to make too many special milling cutters.

First thing will be to totaly measure and draw the revolver to scale. CopyCat will be used to get all the contours.  We'll see..........making little bullets sounds like fun. Probably end up with two of them as
the proto will be made out of Al. The grooves for the scope mount will be done. Now a function scope in that size ........good grief i hate optics!

Here is a few pics,
RICH

Rich ,

Why scale down ? I'd scale up and make bigger bangs.

Hey, that's almost kinda cool.  ??? I do hafta ask WHY!!!! WHY WHY WHY would anybody in their right mind spend the time and money on such a thing....and not make it 4 wheel drive.  ;D
Rich, if you do decide to make the pistol, you gotta take a video of it firing when you get finished. Kinda goes without saying, really.

Ed,
Would like to make it bigger, but, but sound effects from  "Dirty Hary" will have to do.

Sam,
Unfortunately it will never be fired, functional in all other respects.

RC,
Yep, that's what you call a grill. I wonder what the neighbors would think if we made one and stuck it on the deck.
The wife would probably ask me to get a check up. Last time i went to have the back end checked ( if you know what i mean), I brought a paper in for the Doc to sign. It would certify that he did an inspection and confirmed that he did not find my brains up my ask. Figured the wife wouldn't be able to dispute what she sometimes believes. He refused sign it, i told him that with a name like Dr. Butt ( and that is his true name), he should be happy that he is truely helping a fellow man in his endeavor to find truth. He didn't agree with my philosophy and still refused to sign the paper. Went home and told the better half that i wanted a new back end Doc since i said he hurt me. She asked what he did. I told her about him refusing to sign the cerificate. She then informed me that maybe he already knew what she has know for years. Sometimes you just can't win!  ;D

Quess it time for a new thread!  ;)

Rich,

Take the judge and scale up for 12 gauge. Then , find someone to shoot it.
Hell , I have a double barrel 410/45 long colt derringer.  ;D

That's all very nicely done Rich.

Reminded me of my apprenticeship days, sitting in front of an old shaper for hours ducking those flying chips. Then sweeping them all up at the end of the day.
