Spindle Motor Inverters
« on: January 15, 2008, 10:49:43 AM »
Hello Everybody,
I am wanting an inverter for a small lathe spindle. 1/2 hp
Is anyone familiar with the GS1 series from Automation Direct ?
http://web1.automationdirect.com/adc/Shopping/Catalog/AC_Drives/GS1_(120_-z-_230_VAC_V-z-Hz_Control)/GS1-10P5
They are relatively inexpensive but I have no history on them.
Any advise will help. Other suggestions welcome too.
Thanks much,
RC

Hey RC, I have seen those in use, but not sure of the features. I use a GS2 on my mill and it is vey nice. It has the capability of modbus communication which to some, could be priceless. It is very tuneable, lots of parameters. I would get breaking resistors for which ever you choose, if it is an option.

Brett,
The dynamic braking is advertised at 15 to 20% of torque.    Do you have the resistor and how effective is the braking on your machine ?
Say...from 1000 rpm to complete stop.

I am working on another project that requires the motor to run fwd., stop as quickly as possible, then reverse to a stop.
I'd like to do this with a servo, but $$$$$.

Brett, I like the looks of the GS2 much better. GOOD brakes. REAL good brakes according to the specs.
The GS1 is internal, 20%. No resistor.

Hey RC,
I have got to get a breaking resistor. I have my accel to .5 and the breaking takes about 5 seconds without a resistor. Should be able to get it to .2 I think. This is a 3 HP, and from 5600 RPM Spindle at 60Hz to 0. It use to take about 30 seconds.

Brett,
I ordered the GS2, 1/2 hp and the resistor. Would have gotten a 1 hp but they're out of stock till mid Feb.
Question:
Is it a NO NO to use an inverter that is rated WAY over the motor ? Like 5-7hp vfd and a 1-2hp motor ?
I have access to some larger ones pretty cheap but do not need that much hp. I also like to stay single phase for the smaller machines.  I'm running a rotary phase converter for my 3ph stuff.
Just wondering.... ::)
See Ya,

No problem at all doing that, I have a 5KW one on my 1.5KW Bridgeport

Thanks Hood.
That's what I was hoping.

I am running a 2 hp inverter on my 14x40 lathe with 6" chuck and with resistor can stop from 1000 rpm in about .8 second with no belt slip , any faster and the chuck will occasionaly unscrew

That's actually BETTER than I would have expected.
Anxious to set mine up...should be here tomorrow.
Thanks ..............bum,
