HP ENCODER QEDS-7148
« on: December 04, 2007, 04:53:14 PM »
Hi,
I have just bought 3 HP ENCODER QEDS-7148  encoders
off ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150177860536

there are only three wires coming from them, does anyone know how to wire them for
quadralature? I have tried getting info from the vendor but they appear to be
ignoring my emails!
  regards
      Tony

I have done some searching and it looks like these encoders may not be any use to you, seems they are low speed encoders meant for a max of 300RPM.
See here http://books.google.com/books?id=jlvlZrAb92oC&pg=PA269&lpg=PA269&dq=%22qeds+7148%22+encoders&source=web&ots=yvQ7OkC7YO&sig=_-Sa7fqXE4lHTiw_u31oCOz7shg

Hood,
  Thanks for taking time.
yes I found that link before, but I was intending on striping them and modifying them.
or probably using them as mpg encoders. They were cheap enough!

Do you have any pics of the inside, it may be that they are using the case as the ground and the three wires are you 5v+, channel A and channel B.

Hood,
I doubt it as the case is plastic.
I'll strip one tommorow and see if I can get some photos.
   cheers

might be worth contacting the guy in the following thread on CNC Zone to see if he ever found out the wiring. http://www.cnczone.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-17774.html
Also have you contacted the eBay seller to see if he knows?

Tony,

try using a meter to check the resistance between the 3 wires. Many small units are of the resistive type and are effectively A,B & common and act as switches. To use them ground the common & use the other 2 as A & B, assuming there are pull-up resistors on the inputs.
