New guy to cnc world
« on: May 04, 2016, 10:26:04 AM »
Ok well ive just recently assembled the cnc router. I have just a demo version of mach3 for the time being and im having a problem with calibrating the axis. I chose to do it in inches and have 10160 steps per unit. My dro is set in inches but reads in metric. Is this just locked for the demo. If i change the steps in calibration to 4064 steps per unit it works accurately in metric. Theres got to be something im missing here. Thank you all! Tim

Hi Tim,

Steps is related to a physical thing - the amount of steps needed to send to the driver to move the axis one unit. Its not meant to be used to convert inches to metric etc, next go config->select native units and make sure that is set correctly.

Make sure any code used is not switching from metric to inches etc

The only way for me to get machine to move accurately is by calibrating axis measuring its movement. Ive got it to move how much i want just dont think i want to be using metric as the dro is showing movement in mm and my native units set to inches.

360/1.8=200. 200/5=40  40x25.4=10160 microsteps
5mm pitch ballscrews mounted to motor with coupling. As soon as i get a chance im going to reset the switches on the drivers to set up in mm. I still would like to see units displayed in inches though.

Did you go to Config>Select Native Units & click "Inches"?  Just sayin', it's been forgotten before.  Don't ask me how I know. ;D

It is set to inches in native units. When i get a chance im going to reset the drivers, then tune motors again and ill set native units to metric and see how that goes.

I redid the driver set up and it is doing the distance i ask but im in metric though so next step for me is to buy the full version. I ordered some spindle drive cable and a solid state relay to power on water pump for the famous huanyang vfd spindle. Thank you all for the help.
