Z axis motor is going crazy
« on: February 10, 2016, 10:46:43 AM »
Alright so I am running my machine with a gecko G540 with mach3. I had it all set up and have been cutting things out for about a month now until today when in the middle of a cut my Z axis stepper motor started going crazy. I stopped the machine and have been trying to figure out what the problem is but cant figure it out. when I want to move the Z axis up it will move down for a bit then move up and it does the same when I try to move it downward. I have read about others having this same problem and the advice that was given to them was to change the pulse width to 15 and if that doesn't work enable sherline mode. Well I cant find the pulse width anywhere! in motor tuning there is a step pulse and a dir. pulse but there is now pulse width. what ones is considered pulse width? step pulse or dir pulse? and where do you enable sherline mode? I have been watching the movies and reading the manual on the machsupport website but I cant find anything that can help. So if someone would help me figure all this out it would be super nice I am sure its not to hard.

The pulse width is actually the step pulse, but try setting them both to 10-15.

But if it was working correctly, check your wiring connections, especially on the direction pins.

To just clarify the direction pins would be my DB9 cables right? I'll go check to see if the sobering is good on my z axis DB9 cables connector.

Or do you me the direction pins in the ports and pins setup? I just got done checking the DB9 on the z axis it is all good that is not the problem. I tried setting both the step and dir pulse to 15 it didnt change anything. Any other ideas?

Actually, with the G540, the dir pins are in the parallel port cable, so there shouldn't be an issue with them.

after a few hours of trouble shooting I found out what was wrong with it. One of the wires from the z axis was cut by something. so I fixed that and it fixed the problem thanks for the help.
