Mach4 and Windows 10
« on: July 30, 2015, 02:12:38 AM »
I finally broke down and bought a new PC for use with Mach3 & Mach4.

I use an Ethernet Smooth Stepper.

The PC is on the way to me, with Windows 7 installed.

I am thinking of upgrading it to Windows 10 when I receive it.

Is there any reason that Windows 10 would not work with MAch3 or Mach4, and the ESS?

I have already used Mach4 on WIndows 10 preview and it worked well for the little bit of testing that I did with a Hiconn board YMMV.

I'd be concerned about W10 having the authority to determine when it can check for updates and download them.  Stuff like this can cause havoc.  I see this as a killer for Mach on W10.

At least with XP, I can determine when I want to check, download, and install updates.  PS, yes, I still get updates for XP.

If your worried about that, just disable your network card while Mach is running.

If it were only that simple.  Unfortunately, when Windows goes looking for updates, it brings the system to it's knees whether it can connect to the internet or not.  Prior to W10, one could just disable automatic checking.

Besides, it's nice to be able to connect to the design system to get G code files.  Sneaker net is so 1990.

It seems that I read somewhere that the Pro version of Windows 10 allows you to disable automatic updates.

Yes, so that the IT guys aren't driven crazy when MS decides it's time for all of the enterprise's computers to be updated.  It allows for an orderly corporate roll out.

Mach4 requires that the network card be enabled so that you can get a PC id. If you disable the card it might not work. You could of course disconnect the network cable which will work.
The nice thing with an external controller is that computer use is not as critical as with the p-port

I'm running 8.1 Pro, so I'll get 10 Pro for free.
If I was building a new machine, I'd spend the extra $30-$40 to get Windows 10 Pro.

I have Win7 Pro 64 bit on this machine and a couple of other machines with Win7 Pro 32 bit, including the CNC computers.

There is something about my development machine (64 bit) that has me on hold for the upgrade, so they say, so probably one of the less complex 32 bit machines will take the plunge first.

I'll post back the results when I have some . . . provided my internet still works . .  :D
