Windows 8 and Mach 3
« on: May 15, 2015, 08:45:42 AM »
I have tried to run Mach 3 on a windows 8 computer and added a serial port for my Gecko G540 4-Axis Driver Controller and nothing happens?  Do I need to buy Mach 4 to operate my CNC?

I don't believe that you can use the parallel port with Windows 8.
You canuse an external motion controller like a Smoothstepper or UC100 with Windows 8.

I just bought a new computer to work with BobCAM version 27 it is windows 8 with the recommended 64 bit processor. From them I also bought Mach 3 so I could do all of the operations from one computer. Now I am reading the Mach 3 that I bought today will not run on this computer. Is this true?? What is the fix?? Do I need to load two versions of windows on the Computer? I feel this should have been ikn BIG BOLD PRINT if this software will not work on a newer computer. I did not see a new computer with old operating systems at the store??

I believe it is very clearly stated as to the Requirements

Software Requirements
Mach3 Minimum Recommended Requirements:
Requirements if using the parallel port for machine control:

Desktop PC (Laptops are not supported) with at least one parallel port
32-bit version of Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 (64-bit versions will not work)
    1Ghz CPU
    512MB RAM
Non-integrated Video Card with 32MB RAM(Large G-code files, especially 3D files will require a video card with 512MB RAM or higher)

Requirements if using an external motion device for machine control:

An appropriate external motion controller (options can be found on the Plugins page)
Desktop or Laptop with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    1Ghz CPU
    512MB RAM
Video Card with 32MB RAM(Large G-code files, especially 3D files will require a video card with 512MB RAM or highe

I have Windows 8.1 with Mach3 and UC 100.
Can't get liscense to work with Mach3.  Always comes up running demo.
Demo axis numbers change with up/dn keys etc., but milll motors nothing.
I tried to post a new subject and had no luck with that.
Thanks for any help.

With not much of testing, just some jogging, it seems as the mach 3 works also with Windows 10

I am using Ethernet SmoothStepper with Mach 3.

hi , i have discovered the same just today, with my new cnc and pc set up. after purchasing the oldstyle parallel port,
and attaching it to new pc ect.    the results were obviously nill. I have been advised that if i use Ubuntu,
i am able to boot up my pc with this as the os, and it will be able to recognize the port! as it will run in 32bit!?? i havent tryd yet, but would appreciate it if
anyone could advise if this is a possibility? also, as windows 10 comes as free upgrade, is this compatable with the mach3software.
many thanks and regards,
