Title: Windows 8 and Mach 3
Post by: Mrlarrycop on May 15, 2015, 08:45:42 AM
I have tried to run Mach 3 on a windows 8 computer and added a serial port for my Gecko G540 4-Axis Driver Controller and nothing happens?  Do I need to buy Mach 4 to operate my CNC?

I don't believe that you can use the parallel port with Windows 8.
You canuse an external motion controller like a Smoothstepper or UC100 with Windows 8.

I just bought a new computer to work with BobCAM version 27 it is windows 8 with the recommended 64 bit processor. From them I also bought Mach 3 so I could do all of the operations from one computer. Now I am reading the Mach 3 that I bought today will not run on this computer. Is this true?? What is the fix?? Do I need to load two versions of windows on the Computer? I feel this should have been ikn BIG BOLD PRINT if this software will not work on a newer computer. I did not see a new computer with old operating systems at the store??

You need to use an external motion controller like the Smoothstepper or UC100 if you're using Windows 8.

Mach3 works with 8.1 as well with a external motion controller

I believe it is very clearly stated as to the Requirements

Software Requirements
Mach3 Minimum Recommended Requirements:
Requirements if using the parallel port for machine control:

Desktop PC (Laptops are not supported) with at least one parallel port
32-bit version of Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 (64-bit versions will not work)
    1Ghz CPU
    512MB RAM
Non-integrated Video Card with 32MB RAM(Large G-code files, especially 3D files will require a video card with 512MB RAM or higher)

Requirements if using an external motion device for machine control:

An appropriate external motion controller (options can be found on the Plugins page)
Desktop or Laptop with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    1Ghz CPU
    512MB RAM
Video Card with 32MB RAM(Large G-code files, especially 3D files will require a video card with 512MB RAM or highe

I have Windows 8.1 with Mach3 and UC 100.
Can't get liscense to work with Mach3.  Always comes up running demo.
Demo axis numbers change with up/dn keys etc., but milll motors nothing.
I tried to post a new subject and had no luck with that.
Thanks for any help.

With not much of testing, just some jogging, it seems as the mach 3 works also with Windows 10

I am using Ethernet SmoothStepper with Mach 3.

hi , i have discovered the same just today, with my new cnc and pc set up. after purchasing the oldstyle parallel port,
and attaching it to new pc ect.    the results were obviously nill. I have been advised that if i use Ubuntu,
i am able to boot up my pc with this as the os, and it will be able to recognize the port! as it will run in 32bit!?? i havent tryd yet, but would appreciate it if
anyone could advise if this is a possibility? also, as windows 10 comes as free upgrade, is this compatable with the mach3software.
many thanks and regards,

If you're asking if you can run Mach3 with Ubuntu, the answer is no.

Mach3 will run just fine under Windows 10 but you cannot use the parallel port it has to be Ethernet (preferable) or USB, external motion controller.

you only can use 32bit on win 8.1 and below for parallel port, 64 bit requires a external board like a ESS, pokeys, pdmx so on.

I don't know if win 10 32 bit works with the parallel port, you can get win10 32bit or 64bit.

Mach4 or Mach3 does not work with linux whatever flavor it is.

Mach3 and 4 work on win 10 and below ever on a computer or raspberry pi.

Do you know for sure that you can use a parallel port in Windows 8? I didn't think that it worked in Windows 8.

I was asking about Mach3.

you can run a parallel port on 8 and 8.1 and 10 the LPT driver`s are there, but there are hoops to jump through to get it to work. mach3 on win 8, 8.1 or 10 no to pp. M4 not above 7 for darwin

I got slapped pretty hard in another thread for commenting on the shortcomings of MACH3 but this is a PERFECT example of a "short coming"....

Just about every other app written in the last 15 years, when they say MINIMUM requirements, that's the MINIMUM that is required to operate the program. If you have a pc that is BETTER than the minimum, the app will run fine....will run better than fine in fact....

So in actuality, those aren't the MINIMUM requirements, those ARE the requirements.......furthermore, how "good" is a program that can only operate on an outdated and unsupported operating system? I know, it can run under vista, but how long is Microsoft going to support that?

Good point about minimum vs the requirements – NFS should perhaps change their wording to avoid future confusion.

Most serious Mach3 users will be operating their machines with a dedicated computer system with many (like me) still using WinXP. Mach3 doesn’t care about Microsoft support or windows updates etc. the basic windows install is all that is required.

Obviously NFS are aware Mach3 is outdated in a number of respects and so Mach4 is here and one day (perhaps not as soon as tomorrow) it will take over my machine control requirements using Win10 or whatever is the OS of the day.

That's a good point about only using a dedicated computer for CNC work, but still, mine is connected to a network so I can easily transfer the designs from my updated design computer to the CNC one....luckily there is no connectivity or file sharing issues between winXP and Win8/8.1/10...yet.....

sorry wrong word thai slang , it's still a bit dicey having a network connection if you run a win10 computer for a Machine controller unless you can find a way to shut up date's down. or connected to a win 10 have a look up how the updates can be done.
