Mach turn threading issues
« on: February 20, 2014, 10:39:29 AM »
Hello. I am having an issue trying to make some threads on my lathe. The lathe will make a correct pass with the correct pitch on the first pass. On its return back to the start of the threads, it is just as slow as the threading pass. When it starts the second pass, it goes extremely fast, ruining the first cut. when it returns, it again moves at a very slow pace. I tried to install an older version, loaded only the necessary info to get the lathe motors to move properly, and it did the same thing. Please help as this is for work, and I have sold management on mach and all of its capabilities. Thanks in advance.

Hi Andy,
Do you have a licensed version ?
Might post your xml, might see something there.
How did you generate the threading code ?
Wizard ?
Might also post the gCode file that is giving you the problems.

Yes, it is a licensed version. The Code came from the simple threading wizard.

I see you have "Timing" enabled on the same port and pin as the Index.
I think you want Index ONLY .... do not use Timing.

See if it makes a difference.

I've tried it both ways. Same results.

Is your rpm constant ?
It looks quite slow @ 170.
Might change it to 600 - 1000 or so and run it again.

I ran it around 400rpm, same results.I used to thread around 90rpm with no issues.

I would suggest you have a look at Threading on The Lathe  write up which can be found in Members Doc's.
After reading it and doing some testing report back on how your doing.

Note the configuration settings, testing methods, and also use of the threading wizard in the write-up.

Does your RPM show a consistent speed?
What is the Frequency on Diagnostics page, ie is it stable and very close to your kernel?

Yes, the RPM's are very consistent. What is bugging me is the fact that the first pass is fine. After that, it acts strangely. The return pass is always slow for some reason. I believe it is moving at the same speed as the first pass. Even when the tool is going fast on the cutting pass, it goes slow on every return pass. I am running my spindle at 170 RPM's. My Kernel is set at 25Khz. I don't think this is the issue because that has never changed. I ran the driver test, and all was good. I looked at the Thread wizard wright-up and that is where I went for my configuration settings after i noticed the first issue. Still no change. I hope this makes sense. Thanks.
