spindle speed rev counting

hi to all
i have retrofitted my 'denford starmill'
the spindle is fitted with a proximity detector that i want to use so that i can be aware of the spindle speed. i an a retired engineer with many many years of cnc production, BUT very little electricaal knowledge, so in very basic laymans terms would someome please talk me through what i need to do pins to use voltage required etc.

It will all depend on what hardware you have, such as type of breakout board, what the specs of the prox are etc.

hi i am using routout equipment, printer port breakout board, the switch does not short when metal introduced does this help?

Not familiar with routout stuff, might be worth asking them if they can help. You will need to give them the part number or even better a link to the specs of the prox you will be using.
