CNC Grinder code
« on: September 30, 2012, 11:18:35 PM »
Hi,.

I want to update an old surface grinder with stepper motor and Mach3.

It's an old boyar shultz, see the pic. Bought it for $500.00 a couple of months ago.

Is there an easy way to program this, like taking 5 passes at .0005 (Z)  and .015 on the Y axis on each pass.

Can be done with my CAM software, but what about macro.

Don't know anything about macro.

It has no coolant , so would like to add it as well. any problem with that if it has not been built with that option?.

Thanks a lot.

Jeff,
You won't find much on applying Mach to do surface grinding that i can recall over the last few years.
One of the problems is wheel wear if one is trying to grind something to dimension. Could probably use a
one of the mill surfacing wizards for the code. Better not have any backlash ( forget about using backlash comp) on the Z as you don't want to be suprised should the Z go down too much. The surface grinds are small so you need good / accurate Z resolution.

I have a small Sanford bench surface grinder and only use it manually.

Should be interesting thread.

Wasn't Terry working on a grinding wizard for this same thing?

Hi Jeff

I think the CNC control will really cone into it's own when form grinding. There will need to be some clever control when producing curves and rads. because of the changing contact point of the wheel.
I can also only see need for 2 axis control.

Hi all, thanks for the replies.

My goal is only to have the grinder work unattended.

You can do that on a hydraulic grinder.

Just program it to remove a certain amount of material and leave stock to do a couple of finish passes.

So it could do the same thing as a hydraulic one would do.

I don't want to build a real CNC grinder.

Again, thanks for your help.

 Dave,
Not sure how far the discussion or what came about from a few threads. Did a quick search and didn't find anything.
I use my grinder as much as my micro drill so no hurry on this end. :)

Hi BR549.

This absolutely what I was talking about.

Where can I get a copy of that wizard.

Still avilable?

Thanks for your help.

Jeff

By the way, wanted to add a linear scale for the Z axis, could I use this as a stop or program a depth limit in Mach3 and it will stop when it reach it.

Or I could put a limit switch on the Z axis, could be on the wheel for the manual feed.

Thanks for that TP, funny how Mach 3 search didn't pick that up when searching "Grinder"
