Mach3 & Win7?
« on: November 20, 2010, 05:04:36 AM »
Hi,
I'm new to CNC. I just bought a 3 axis milling machine (1200x2400x200mm) from China.  I am building a computer for it and wonder which OS to use.  This is for personal use and the computer will be connectet to the home network (Gb lan), where all the connedtet PSs run Win7ultimate64.

Can I use Win7ultimatex86 whitout problems, or should I go for good old xp?

The machine was delivered with controller card and software package, but I havent opened it, I'm going to use Mach3 & BobCAD.
Should I use the paralell port on the PC or the chinees controller card?

I would be nice if someone bothered to safe me a lot time :)

You can't use a 64 bit OS with the parallel port. but Win7 32 bit should work fine.

Do you have a link to the Chinese controller? If it doesn't use the parallel port, than more than likely it won't work wit Mach3.

Thakns for aswering

It's good to learn I can use Win7 32, then I can have same user interface on all my computers.

The chinees card is a PCI card whith 15 pin.  I have several CDs with software (UcancamV8 and something else) and probably drivers for the card. When I look at files on the CDs there is a mixture of englis and chinees letters, and I'm somehow uncomfotable with it.  I can commumicate whith the seller on email, but both being non englis speaking misunderstanding occur.  Thats why I bought BobCAD and Mach3.  Maby I can skip this controller card and just use the paralell port on the computer?
If you would like to see the machine it's on salecnc.com and the modell is XJ1224.  They sell also controller cards, probably the same as I have.

Thanks again,
Gudmund

The PCI card won't work with Mach3. Your best bet would probably to by a parallel port breakoutboard and connect your motors to that.

Can you run Mach 3 on a 64 bit desktop?

Mach itself will run on a 64 bit machine but the parallel port driver will not. So it will run on your office machine for test purposes just fine. If you want to use a 64bit OS for the CNC PC then you'll need to use an external motion control card that will work with Mach and the 64 bit OS (SmoothStepper, Kflop, etc.)

During most part of 2010 we've been selling CNC machines with win7-32bits to our customers, no problems reported to date, no special setups. Only thing to remember if you install it on a non shared location you will have to give permissions to the user, or run the program with admin privileges (the easiest way)

2010 thread needing a 2012 Answer...     I am making my Desktop CNC from scratch.  A complete DIY home build, no plans, just determination (http://wbaldwincnc.wordpress.com).  Windows 8 will be out by the end of the year and I just can't bring myself to run a 32bit OS or WinXP for that matter, just can't, so it looks like I need an external USB/IP motion controller.  I have been reading up on them, but many also have drivers that will not work in Win7 64bit.  Can anyone point me to a USB motion controller that works with Win7 64bit??  One that they like and are using?  Thanks!
