Setup units
« on: October 16, 2006, 05:29:56 PM »
When I change the Setup Units for the motor tuning dialog does that affect the G-Code I load in any way? I have G-Code in Inch units. If I hook up to a machine with Metric Ballscrews and set my motors correctly does Mach translate the inch-unit G-Code instructions to the correct turns for the metric screws? If so, does it slow down the program and/or do I lose accuracy?

If you would like to have an inch machine set the setup units to inch. then calc the steps per unit and put that into the motor tuning. if you need to have 3412.9437 steps per unit then that is okay :)

is that the only way to get the machine to run in inches?

If your machine is set up in metric units and you want to run  inch code then a G20 at the start of the code will tell Mach to run in Inch.
If you were set up in Inch units and wanted to run a metric file then a G21 at the start of the code would tell Mach to run it in metric units.

In fact it is always best to have the G20 or G21 in the code even if it is the same as your setup units.

I would suggest if you predominantly use metric code then set your units up as metric and vice versa.

Changing the setup units is only meant for initial setup it is not meant for changing units when running code.

Having issues with our plasma cutter diving below zero after the event is started! Using BobCad v21, my g-codes are correct! Mach3, and torch height control as well!

Fritz,
You would be best to start a new topic with a title that relates to your question and you will likely get a few replies from the guys that use plasma.
