Metric steps per setup ( quick question )
« on: November 23, 2010, 08:41:39 AM »
Sorry for the Nub question but the more I read the more I'm confused >:(

Uk so going to run metric.
Gecko G540 with 1.8 steppers
Ballscrew 1605

when I set steps per unit this is what I think I need to put, If someone could confirm I have it right would be of great help

1.8 * 360 = 200 steps for motor
200 / 5 (5mm ballscrew move) = 40 steps per unit

so I make that one turn to move 1mm is that what I should have,
I have seen imperial setting where lead is  multiplied to the motor steps hence why I'm confused
cheers

You need to take account of the Geckos micro stepping which is 10 so each rev of the motor is 200 x 10 so your final Steps per will be 2,000/5 = 400

Thanks for the reply Hood

I wasn't sure if the G540 auto switched to micro steps and full steps when need, so just needed to put the full step
So I take it's set to the max steps for the drive ie x10 microsteps

Yes the drive I think may switch to full step when moving fast but that is done internally in the drive and Mach knows nothing about it, so you need to feed the drive with the value calculated with the microstepping.
