stepper motors making "weird" electronic noise
« on: January 14, 2010, 07:11:51 PM »
3 axis wood router using xylotex driver and 497 oz.in. stepper motor. When moving running a file there is sound like electronica noise (its what a whistling cyborg would sound like). The steppers were not making the noise a week ago, I am not sure what has caused this issue. Any suggestions on how to fix it. Is this a shielding issue? If so.... my cords are shielded.

Steppers will make noise, it will vary with the speed and microstepping resolution and type of driver. What have you changed in the last week.
Happy machining , Jeff Birt

(Things I have changed) nothing really,  I had an issue a few days ago with my power supply to my driver so I had to disconnect my port and bring it into the office to take a look at it. But there was nothing wrong with it, my on/off switch had some dust in it and just needed a quick cleaning. that is the only thing can I really think of.

I understand that the stepper motors make noise but these sounds are at different pitches and frequencies, and it varies on the speed of stepper motor. It is not quiet noise, I can handle and understand a little noise  but this is something more out of a sci-fi / 80's synth music going on.

I am sure there is something I can do to make it more manageable, any suggestions?

If you have a camera with a video function on it take a quick video and post it on Youtube and link to here and someone will be able to tell you if its a normal sound or not and if not will likely be able to give you a suggestion to what is the cause.

LOL, Frankie reminds me of the song The Devil went down to Georgia. The part where "a band of evil demons joined in".  ;D
