Last minute Gift ;o)
« on: December 21, 2008, 08:26:45 AM »
This is my first actual V Carve project and it was done on my little Taig mill for my wife as another last minute gift.

The size is 2.000 X 6.000 at a .500 thick and is made from mahogany. I first machined it, then stained it with rosewood gel stain, then before it was completely dry, I lightly sprayed it with satin black paint. Then, just before that was completely dry, I used a toothbrush to remove and blend the black paint and stain to give it that "antiquish" look. After everything was dry, I just sanded the top surface to level everything off and used tung oil to finish it. It's not as glossy as the pic shows..

My wife always loved this saying and someday I hope to be able to build a nice size gantry router system to be able to make a larger version to hang somewhere.

Not nearly as nice as some of the work here but thought you might like to see it anyway-

Happy Holidays to all of you-

Dave

Looks nice Dave. Vcarve seems to be serving you well. Maybe you want to make another sign
which reads "NOW LOOK WHAT WE GOT".  ;)

Here is something you can fool with.
Pick up a small tube of say "burnt amber"  artist oil paint at a hobby store. You can thin the  paste out using  lacquer thinner.
apply / rub to any part and shade to suite to your desire. A good product in a spray can for sealing is "DEFT".
Since it's lacquer based, dries very fast, can make it dead flat with built up coats, you can also vary sheen from very high gloss to matt finish, IS REPAIRABLE.
A light coating of shellac can seal grain and allow for drying in the soft or end grain and sands out easly allowing for control of staining.
Just a few tips for they are worth from custom gun stock making.

That certainly IS very nice Dave.
Would also make a nice anniversary gift.
Ours was the 18th, wish I would had one of these to give instead of a card and flowers.
Maybe next time.
Thanks again,
RC

Wonderful job Dave.

With work like that you don't need a wood router just a bigger mill (for larger signs).

Regards, Tweakie.

lol, I actually tried to sign up there as budman68 but the software wouldn't let me. Not sure why because I checked and there's nobody there with that name.  :)
