l297/l298 with mach3
« on: December 18, 2008, 06:22:23 AM »
the board are my build using L297/L298 and have input for STEP/DIR/ENABLE .
the step motor operation is:when a signal occur on step motor pin, enable pin should be activated
to make motor to start and when the signal is lost, enable pin should be low.

i've got no problem for STEP pins adjusment, and either for DIR  pin,but for ENABLE  pin,it is always high or low and i can not control it when needed.
when i set ENABLE pin to "1" the step motor works with mach3, but when there is no signal at STEP signal pin,the step motor is still active and it sounds like buzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!
how can i use L297/L298 to drive stepper, they have enable pin and i can not control this pin with my software.

If enable turns off, the motors will be completely un-powered, and will be able to be pushed off position by cutting forces.  You NEED enable to remain active, unless the system is in E-stop.   Buzzing and hissing are facts of life with steppers.  You'll have to either get used to it, or turn up the radio.

I would suggest simply wiring the drives so they are always enabled.  With steppers, I see no real benefit to having Mach control the enables.  Servos are a different matter.

I am having similar problems with using L298N drivers . I AM OPERATING MACH3 THROUGH AN INTEFACE BOARD INTO A L298N DRIVER. I GET STEP AND DIRECTION BUT THE MOTOR WILL NOT TURN. IT APPEARS THAT THERE IS NO PULSE VOLTAGE COMING FROM MACH3. I HAVE RESEARCHED L298N DRIVERS AND THERE IS NOT INFO AS TO WHETHER I HAVE TO USE AN L297 WITH THE L298N DRIVER IN THIS APPLICAATION. ANY HELP WOULD BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.
