Mach Conv. Candidate ?
« on: November 12, 2008, 11:38:51 AM »
 :)
This pic sent to me from a friend. Calls it a Bridgeport 14x34.
Does anyone recognize the model ?
Is 14x34 the table size or the x/y working envelpoe ?
Might be a good Mach conversion candidate at $700 ?
Thanks,
RC

14x34 is definitely not the work envelope.  The table is barely that long.  The 49" table has about a 34" travel, and that's no 49" table.  But, for $700, looks like a steal.

Do you have 3 phase capability? Any way to check it out before purchasing? A bad spindle or a phase converter would jack the cost up considerably. That's an interesting quill feed, never seen one like that. There's allot of money in just the power draw, motors, electronics, and other stuff if they are good, even if the mill was worn out beyond use.

I'm limited to 240v single phase through a rotary converter.
I could probably go look at it but it is not under power.
I already have AC servos and drives ready to go.
I am considering this mill instead of CNCing a regular older BP J that I have. From scratch....lead screws and all.
At least this one is already CNC. Much of the work is done.

Any general tips on inspecting a rig like this that is not under power to determine its basic condition ?
Not worried about the electrics of course.

I've seen several Series 2's but never one quite like this one.

Ray, I'm with you on the size. I have a 9x36 and a 9x42 and assume the dims. were referring to the actual table size.
Is this the same size as the Boss ? If so, what would the travels be ?
Thanks Men,
RC

Thats an early series 1 CNC I think. Table etc are similar to mine but mine has the rigid ram where that has the conventional vee ram. I think I have the parts drawing of that head. Table travel is 12 x 18 and a real pain in the arse for me, cant wait to get the Beaver Mill finished, 16 x 32 :)

Hood,
Is the VEE and RIGID Ram you refer to the same as boxed or dovetailed ways ?
I was hoping for 14" Y, but could live with this I guess.
Looking at 16-18" y VMC's...the $$$ goes WAY up !

Might pester you later for the paperwork on this head.
Thanks,
RC

The rigid ram is like in the pic below, the vee ram is like a standard  manual Bridgeport. A series 2 Bridgeport would give you box ways and much more travel, think about the same as  the beaver, maybe slightly less.
Will see if I can find the drawings.

Oh meant to say it should have chromed ways and also an auto oiler that wont let the spindle run if the oil level is low. This tends to make them last well but some of the metering jets can clog up through time and so if something isnt getting oil it can wear badly. Just check to see that the screws and ways look like they have oil on them and you should be fine.

I see now what you mean by the ridgid ram.
Thanks for the tips too.
Might go look at it next week.
Should be a rewarding project and less involved that converting the old J.
He also has a Hurco but it's a bit out of my $ range right now.
I'll post a pic if I can  find it.

It's a 14x30 with a 12 pos. tool changer
