Spindle Control
« on: October 19, 2008, 03:12:21 PM »
Hi,

I'm trying to setup my mill with spindle control. I think I have the hardware setup correctly but my issue is getting anything out of my BOB (cnc4pc - c11g). I've gone into Ports&Pins -> Motor Outputs, enabled the spindle and set the port and pin. I went to Ports&Pins -> Spindle Setup and enabled the spindle and set it to step/dir. I've tried playing with the tuning of the motor in Motor Tuning -> Spindle.

I'm checking the system by issuing a m3s2000 in MDI and looking for a blinking light and the pin.

Any help greatly appreciated,
Adam

Ok, I did have it wired incorrectly afterall. I didn't have 12V input to the board (duh). Got it now but I'm only getting .01V output reguardless of spindle speed.

Hi, Adam

In Config, Spindle Pulleys, Do you have a Max Speed set.

Now you've got me confused, Is it Step/Dir or PWM ?

I started out with Pulley #2, max speed 2000. Set rpm to 2000 and got .01V output on my "analog output 0-10V".

I then went to Pulley #8, max speed 25000. Set rpm to 8000 and got .01V out.

I believe I need to be using step/dir and not PWM. These are the documents I'm referencing.

Hi, Adam

What pins are assigned to your spindle step & direction,  Dock's seem a little Fuzzy, 14, 8 or 14, 16, Pin 8 seems to be A axis step

I'm sure theres someone out there to clarify this, Have you tried changing the Low Actives for the Spindle.

Also check your step/dir Pulse setting in Motor Tuning is set to 1 to 5 as noted.

Chip,

I have played with the dir active low and step active low to no avail.

I've got the spindle step on pin 14 and the spindle direction on pin 16.

On the BOB, the pin 14 led blinks when the spindle is on but I still don't see any voltage out of the analog output measuring with a multimeter with a probe on each terminal.

Depending on which command I issue, M4S2000 or M3S2000, I can get the pin 16 LED to be on or off. Pin 16 is hardwired to a electromechanical relay with both N0 and NC terminals. When I try to "switch" directions of the spindle, the pin 16 LED will toggle but the relay will continue to do the same thing (which ironically, is be open for the NC and closed for the NO).

So my conclusion at this point is that mach3 is doing what its supposed to be doing as perceived by the LEDs on the BOB, its just that the BOB isn't behaving how it is suppose to. It's getting the signal and doing nothing with it and as far as I can tell, that should be irrelevant of what external wiring I have attached (as long as I haven't fried anything, which I don't believe I have).

What do you think?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi, Adam

Do the other axises work, Is the Charge Pump assigned to pin 17, There are quit a few of these out there,

Haven't used one myself.

Other axises do work. I am using a charge pump assigned to pin 17 and it is also working fine.

Hi, Adam

Didden't see a comment on the step/dir Pulse setting in Motor Tuning, Set to 1 to 5 as noted.

Chip,

I've tried playing with the pulse setting for step and dir 1-5. One thing that did seem odd to me was that even if I change axises, that setting stays the same, like its a global setting instead of specific to each axis.

I also noticed that I've had PWM checked instead of step/dir in spindle setup. I know I've gone back and forth on that setting but am pretty sure it should be step/dir. Once I put it back to step/dir, the pin 14 led doesn't blink at all, like it used to. kinda wierd.

Thanks again,
Adam
