I own an AVID CNC machine with the Mach4 software and an ESS (Ethernet SmoothStepper) controller. Recently, I have installed a Drewtronics probe, and I'm planning to connect a tool setter today. I have a fundamental question regarding how these two components will interact.

I understand that the probe will be used to set the work coordinates, particularly the Z height, which is crucial for the tool setter operation. When I perform a tool touch-off, does it set an offset from the Z 0 position of the workpiece, or do I need to perform a separate tool touch-off using the probe?
