PC to run Mach3
« on: May 07, 2022, 12:17:13 AM »
Hi, I am having to down size the PC I use and found this (link below) on Ebay. Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether it would be suitable to do the job.

Thanks.

Do you need a parallel port? If so then no.  There are loads of mini win10 machines around that can run Mach3 but will need an Ethernet or USB external motion controller.

Thanks for your reply. The description for the item states that it has a Parallel port that's why I was looking at it. At the moment I am running a laptop with the UC100 USB to Parallel port dongle to a Leadshine MX3660. It is proving to be quite unreliable as I get popups during a program saying "UC100 can't be found" and the program just stops and is pretty much unrecoverable. This is a CNC Laser and when the fault happens the laser just hangs in the one spot and continues to burn. I also have a CNC Router which runs Mach3 on Win XP going through a Gecko G540. I have never had any problems with this setup. With the laser I just want to go with what I know works for me IE parallel ports both ends. Cheers.

Couple of possibilities....hate to ask but is the UC100 genuine?. There are swags of Chinese fakes out there on Amazon, Ebay and the likes. They are not a patch on the real thing.
The other possibility is electrical noise, USB is quite prone to this, and is for that reason that Ethernet is dominating the motion controller market. You might try two or three clip on
ferrite cores on the USB cable.

A UC100 is a genuine motion controller and therefore has no need of a parallel port, and will run well on a W10 machine.

Machs parallel port driver MUST be 32bit Win7 or earlier. It will not run on ANY 64bit machine or any W8 or later OS. Thus even if the PC comes with a parallel port, it might work with a printer
but may NOT work with Mach3, unless its 32 bit and W7 or earlier.

Thanks for that. The UC100 is genuine, I purchased it direct from the manufacturer. My Router runs on XP so I am in the process of getting an other small PC with parallel port and running XP. I have heard that laptops can have some background noise and I suspect this is the issue. I'm just going to go with the PC and XP, it has worked for years with my router. Cheers
