Upgrade from 4.2.0.3804 to 4.2.0.4517 with ESS
« on: February 22, 2021, 12:49:19 PM »
Hello,
I guess it is time for me to upgrade to a newer version of Mach4.  My  system uses and ESS and has a spindle controlled by Mod bus. I will be going from Mach4 version 4.2.0.3804 with ESS 232 to I believe Mach4 build 4517 with ESS 270 is the latest.  Is it as simple a installing the new software over the old version?  I some how do not think so.  Is there some information on how to perform this upgrade?
Thanks,
Todd

I've developed a method over the years that works great for me.

Rename C:\\Mach4Hobby to something like C:\\Mach4Hobby_3804
Install the new version of Mach4 and it'll create a new Mach4Hobby directory/folder.
Open two explorer windows side by side
Copy your Profiles, Screens, Macros, Plugins, license, maybe modules, any custom Lua files that might be called by anything in the screenset, over to the new version, same folders.
Done.
By renaming folders you can go back easily if you desire.

And, long as your upgrading after all this time, might as well install 4612, the new release version and ESS 270, or tomorrow, ESS 272!!

Ok, I upgraded to 4612.  a couple questions now.  I cloned my hard drive before upgrading and  put a larger SSD in my pc.  would that change my PC ID?
Second question.  I was hoping the upgrade would solve a problem or feature I do not like.  if I enable keyboard jogging when I switch to other applications like V carve pro when I move items in V carve my machine also moves.  I would think if Mach was not the active application  it should not see the arrow key movement in V carve.  I have to very careful to disable  keyboard input before I switch over to V carve.  Is all that normal?
Thanks,
Todd

Todd, I'm afraid the keyboard jogging issue you describe is "normal" behavior. If you change focus and use one of the Mach4 keyboard jog keys in the now focused program, the machine will move. Some here will tell you no NOT change focus, and don't have your machine connected to the internet, two "rules" I don't follow!!

I think I've read where someone wrote a script or something to fix this.

I use a VistaCNC pendant so don't use keyboard jog too much, and if I do, I remember to turn it off right after using it if I'm swapping back and forth between CAM and Mach4.

OH, and if copying your license file over leaves your PC ID wrong, then, yes, I guess the HD changes the PC ID!! You can easily get another license and deactivate the old one if necessary, on the web site.

Thanks Tom.
I have always been curious where that PC ID comes from. Is it part of Window 10?  Anyways I was able to get the new license and am up an running.
The jogging thing I would think is a safety issue and they would want to fix it.  I guess not. I also often use the Imach pendent mostly.
Thanks again,
Todd

I think the PC ID is hashed from hardware, but don't know which hardware, or how it works. Windows does this with activation, too, but I KNOW Windows doesn't burp up with an HD change, you can clone away and be good, but probably a processor or NIC swap would trigger it!! The good news here is Artsoft has been very liberal with hobby licensing and you have to push it a ways to irk anyone!!
