Mach3 motor velocity limitations, velocity
« on: June 25, 2019, 10:30:05 AM »
Very new to cnc routering. My current setup is a warp9 smooth stepper, chinese 5A BOB, i/o expansion board, 425oz stepper motors. Running A slaved to my Y axis on 20mm (5mm/rev) linear rails. This is home built. My question is finding my sweet spot for feeds and speeds. Currently 3/4 MDF running 175 in/min @ 7000 rpm is cutting nice. I want to utilize more spindle speed and crank up my motor velocity. I have not got them to miss steps yet. Mach3 though is limiting my Velocity settings to 205 in/min. I input 300 and it defaults back to 205 and change. Is this the max? Is Gearing the factor that would increase my speed.

Velocity is limited by Kernel frequency, which is set in the Smoothstepper Plugin.

Thanks, Will take a look when I connect back up tonight. Is this where i currently have 64k set? What does this setting impact? I dont want to go down a rabbit hole changing one setting that will affect another.

Hi,
the Ethernet SmoothStepper can produce outputs up 4Mhz. The concept of kernel frequency is a hang over from Machs parallel
port days, it has no bearing on the ESS.

As an experiment try changing the 'kernel' speed both upwards and downwards.

To my recollection the advice given on the Warp9 forum is to set the kernel at 25kHz and leave it. It has no bearing on the ESS
output pulse rate.
