using multipass?
« on: July 21, 2007, 10:44:21 PM »
I have a part I am trying to make. it is a base made from MDF. basically it is 2 rectangles the outer is being cut to a depth of .750 (this is the last cut) and the inner is cut to a depth of .250. my router bit can only eat .500 material (if I wanted that much tool preassure, which i don't) so I tried to use the multipass to cut both lines. my problem is it is trying to make both cuts the .750 now. how do I use the multi pass for both cuts? if that isnt do able how do I run the part and only run the deepest cut with multipass?

Thanks
Bill

Can you post the DXF file I can play with?

Brett,
I created the file in casmate (my CAD prog) exported it to .dxf.
opened lcam seperated layers, then defined depth for block one then for block 2. in Mach you can view them and the layers are offset like they are supposed to be. the inner line is .250 down and the outer is .750 down. then I opened the multipass wizard, when I try to set the cut depths that is where the file goes wrong. All lines end at what ever depth set. for instance if I do for the outer block .750, the inner sets to .750 too, and vice versa if I set it to .250. The wizard doesnt offer the abality to seperate the blocks.

I think if you use the multi pass wizard, it will do all of the code the same. This is what I got in Lazycam. It has no feedrates.

Okay, then what are my options? 1. write 2 files to run one outer then one inner, and 2.would be ? if any

Yeas, option 1 is correct. The best option I think would be to look at Lazy Cam. It comes with Mach, should be an Icon on an exe file in your Mach3 root folder. The Pro version is coming along nicely and you can upgrade to pro by buying a licenses that is cheap. Here is a link to a video, towards the bottom. Lazy 2,0 intro and pocketing.

If you are already using Lcam it will do the multistepping for you there is no need to run multistepping after Lcam. When you set the max tool cut depth per step Lcam does all the work for you and creates the code for the steps. Just assign each block to a different layer and set up the tool info, Lcam will do the rest.
