How many steps should I use?

I'm almost finished with my mori sl1 retrofit. My Servos are factory set at 2000 steps per revolution. I can change it to upwards of 16,000 steps per revolutions. It's a 3 to 1 gear reduction.  Not sure what pitch my ball screws are. So what should I use as steps per revolution? I know how to set them up in Mach.

If you don't know the screw pitch you will have to either measure it by placing a dial indicator suitably and turning the screw once or use Mach 3 and carefully test by entering a distance and measuring the resulting move.

Mach3 has an auto-calibrate feature on one of its screens - this might help but i would start by only entering small distances.

If they are adjustable, then they are using electronic gearing. You want to sett hem to as high a value as you can, but you mat be limited by the pulse rate of the PC or motion controller that you are using.

@ger21, yeah that's what I figured. I'm using a Pokeys 57E motion controller. I've always used stepper with direct drive and used 10 micro steps, but since I'm using servos on professional machine I was wondering if I should go higher.
