4/8 Wires Stepper Motors
« on: November 26, 2015, 08:21:28 AM »
I’m ready to order the 3 stepper motors for my new hobby cnc (table = 26”x 40”, made with 3/8” aluminum plate, fixed gantry, Bosch Colt router, Gecko G540).

Is it better to get the motors with 4 or 8 leads?

You're asking the wrong question.

It doesn't matter if the motor has 4 or 8 wires, as long as it's the right motor for your application.

What size motor were you looking at, and what are the specs you're looking at.

Assuming this is a screw driven machine, what is the pitch of the screws?

Sorry Gerry

10mm lead ball screws.

Motor specs: Kelling KL23H276-30-8B, 282oz/in, 3.0A, 2.2mH
or
KL23H276-28-4B, 280oz/in, 2.8A, 3.6mH

You have the specs wrong on the first one. It's actually 4.2amps and 2.2mH (parallel) or 2.1amps and 8.8mH (series)

If you can afford the extra $20 (total for 3), I'd go with these:

No problem Gerry, thanks. The motor is KL23H2100-35-4A but the spec sheet is KL23H2100-35-4B(7946) and I dont know why

Withe the Gecko540 and 3 of these motors which switching power supply would you go for?
KL-201-24, 24V / 8.3A, $36.95
KL-350-48, 48V / 7.3A, $49.95
KL-350-36, 36V / 9.7A, $49.95

The 48V will give you the most speed, but the motors may run hot.

Hey Gerry

Does it matter if I put a 282 oz.in motor on the Z axis?
http://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/nema-23/nema-23-14-single-shaft-with-flat-282-oz-in-2

I thought a 381oz.in motor may be an overkill for the Z axis but I don’t know if it’s a good idea to have different motors on the same machine

Sure, you can use different motors.
But I would not. Most people find the Z axis on their machine is under powered. The Z axis is fighting against gravity, and often requires much more power than people think.
