step and direction spindle

Hello All
I am redoing the head on a supermax mill and I am using the uhu servo drives and a 2 1/2
treadmill motor for spindle drive.Just playing around with it I cannot get the spindle to operate
correctly with latest ver of mach3.I have a 360 count encoder which works out 1440 steps per rev,
but I am using the step multiplier on the drive to bring it back to 360 steps per rev.I first set it up as
the z axis to check for correct steps per rev and all worked fine,but when set up as the spindle I have
to set the steps to 1440 in order to get it close to running correct speed.I just set rpm to 60 and count
how many revs in a minute and I am getting around 48.As I understand it steps shold be steps per rev
and vel. max revs per second .

Any suggestions?

Go with what works :)
 
The steps per unit is not that big of a deal... you need to know the RPM and multiply that by the ppr. this will give you the frequency that you need to set. I would set the ppu to 1000 and move the Vel to the number that gets the max speed and call it good.

I did have some succes with it last night.I ended up setting steps to 90 and vel around 11500,
with a index now set up it was pretty close.I did notice that setting the pulley in use really
help pull the rpms closer ,but I will give your suggestion a try tonight .

Hey Brian
I set the steps to 1000 and just kept bumping up the vel until it would not run.
It runs much better and tracks a lot closer to true spindle rpm.One thing I did
 notice is when the spindle reaches around 2000 rpm it only displays 0. I am
using the index channel on a bei h25 encoder,is there something I can do to get
a better signal to the input pin?

You will need to have a longer index pulse... that would help

Hi, Rick

On My Compact 5 Lathe the index disk is about 4.5" in Dia. with about a 5/8 " slot to allow Mach to have time to see the opto Puls.

You may be able to use your Index pulse output as it is and add a IC555 Timer to reset with a adjustable time delay, R1 Var. resistor.

Edit: the resistor value is 1K and cap is 0.1 uf. This seemed to be the best values.

 I have increased the debounce but it is no better. I will give this circuit a try
that Chip has posted,Thanks Chip. I notice with a volt meter on the index pin of the encoder
there is just a slight flicker of the volt meter. This encoder has both + and - channels for
a,b,and z ,would there be any advantage to hooking up the z- in some way.

Hi, Rick

Your encoder sounds like a standard 1 puls one, "I think" The short pules is there whether its low pulsing high or high pulsing low + - , The same way as changing  Active  low with an X or Check Mark in Mach.

In the Diag., Select the C1 for range and Var. R1 for Delay Time adjust.

Are you running in 45 Khz kernel mode ?, Should help Mach to see your pulses.

Whats your Computer speed ?

Yes I am running 45000 mode and I have a 1200mhz computer.I am just looking for
a 555 ic but I dont think I have one so I can't try your circuit today. I am having problems
still reversing the motor at higher speeds when setup as the spindle axis,talking to Art and
he said try setting the spin up delays on the ports and pins page  the same as on the motor
 tuning page ,but it still just kills  the motor. Is it possible my m3 m4 m5 macros need something
extra in them,m3=spin cw m4 spin ccw.

Radio Shack should have what you need if you have one near by.

How about adding a G4 P5 (P value can ether be Sec, or Mil-Sec depending on selection in General Config, "Go4 Dwell in ms Check box"),

Top Right of page.

Ether use in G-code or I think thy work in Macros also ?
