Which version should work?

I am new to Mach software and have purchased a license.  What versions are in production?  What is the best and most stable?  I have tried Mach2 (Windows 2000) and I am having problems with M98/99.  Mach5 loads fine and runs (Windows 2000), but does not seem to talk to the controller.

 Mach3 version 1.84 is the most stable.. and used..
