minimum computor requirements
« on: January 23, 2007, 03:52:46 PM »
so Ive decided to build a computor specificly for running my mill. I want to do it as cheaply as possible but want to make sure it is fast enough to run Mach3 comfortably. Ive looked over the web site and havnt found minimum processor speeds and memory requirements. anyone have  some suggestions for a building a machine solely built to run Mach. well and I guess some CADCAM software too. ;)

Minimum requirements are 1 gig processor and suggested 1 gig of ram.
You can get away with less than that, as some will love to tell you, but its a safe number I have suggested.

man no wonder I cant turn the kernel speed up. Im running on a 447mhz processor with64 megs of ram. heh. explains alot of the problems Ive been having.
thanks

If you want to use a faster kernel speed, you'll want a 2Ghz or faster PC.

Thats funny, I have it running on a PII 400 with 800 mb's of ram. It Can actually put out 36000 pulses. My Celeron 2.2 would only put out 18000 (there is something wrong with that comp)

How do you know how many pulses it is putting out?  Is there some feature I'm missing (only experimenting with Mach 3 for 2 days now).  I am looking at ordering a MicroATX mobo, 2.5Ghz Celeron and 512mb or 1Gb of RAM, but not sure if it will be enough.  I'd like to get the full 45000 pulses that the parallel port supports.

A 1.2Gh with a good graphics card can do better than a 4.2Gh with built in graphics.  Its the overall spec not just the processor, 512Mb is plenty if you are only going to run Mach3.

Without engineers the world stops

Surprising, as I don't see much graphics going on with Mach 3.  Actually, I was thinking of running it headless (no display and no kybd/mouse), integrated into my CNC driver box (yes I have the room).  And instead I would connect to it remotely with my laptop to control it.  Will Mach3 barf if I turn off the display driver?

You can't turn off the graphics controller and still use VNC.
I'm not sure if windows would run without a display device. It would just initiate it's own driver at 640*480 and it would be sloooooooooooooooooooow
I would also expect a lot of displayissues using VNC if you don't have a fast cpu and network. And even then it might not work properly. Depends how mach is drawn.
