G71, G70 roughing, finishing lathe
« on: February 06, 2006, 01:31:58 AM »
Hello. All my turning files are from a Fanuc OT control, running a Clausing storm lathe. The G71 is a good roughing cycle, and the G70 is usually used for finishing after that. In addition, G73 is a roughing using a reentrant cycle. I tried to run these programs in Mach3, and realised that it didn't have these cycles. I read the PDF files for turning, didn't find a roughing or finishing cycle. Anyone have an idea of what cycle I need to do this with? Or, is it reccomended to just program it with CAM? Thanks.

At this point Cam is the best way to go...

Yes, I tried a DXF file, it finishes the part, but no roughing cycle either. have to get the lathe CAM up and running I guess. Thanks.

G70 is usuall ya used for finish profile
G71 "                      " rough "Z" axis  profile(lathe)
G72 "                      " rough "X" axis profile(lathe)

Yes, same here, never used G72 though, was always Z axis roughing it seemed like. I have tried the Mach3 DXF import with roughing lines drawn in and saved as the roughing layer, this sort of works but I'll have to refine it a bit more yet. Surfcam works fairly well for lathe, but is a bit confusing in this mode if you don't use it all the time, certain things you have to remember, etc. Seems like most of the development with Mach is for mills, which is understandable as that is probably 95% of the sales for the product I would imagine.
