Jerky stepper motors? I'm running out of options...
« on: August 15, 2012, 06:57:05 AM »
Hi there! Newbie here.

When I first wired up my motors and ran a simple dome surface finishing test program the motors ran smoothly (the motors are not installed in a machine yet), I could hear and see the X/Y and Z speeding up and slowing down alternately to create the linear arcs that make up the dome shape.
But now when running the same program they are jerky and the feed speed is slowed.

After searching on the forums and trying suggested solutions with no joy I am getting increasingly frustrated.

I have tried:

*Turning CV mode on/off
*Trying different 'Look ahead' settings from 3 to 20.
*Turning off 'Tool path' in diagnostics.
*Checked my RAM/CPU is not struggling in windows task manager.
*Changing motor acceleration settings.

I have also noticed that there is a ticking noise coming from the motors when they are in motion as if they are not running smoothly. Could this be related or is this perfectly normal?

I have fiddled with and edited the code without saving a master so maybe I have taken out a crucial command?? Is there a code that should precede the XYZ movements when 3D machining?

Any help would be much appreciated.

 ???

Hi Headscraper,

Perhaps if you attach your code (additional options, choose file - Zip it, if it is a large file) then we could take a look and possibly find the problem.

Thanks for reply.

The G-code is now attached.

As you will see I have deleted everything apart from the basic surface finishing movements for the sake of testing my system, as it was written for an SCM router.

 :D

That works a treat thanks!!

Feeling a liittle stupid :-[ . I should have asked earlier. Must have spent a couple of days trouble shooting tweaking settings and googling this. I guess if had had a mach3 post for alphaCAM i wouldn't have had the problem. Don't suppose you have one? Maybe that's one for a new thread though..

The sort of chips that come off the machine when you produce lots of work.  ;D ;D

Sorry, I have a weird sense of humour. I look forward to seeing some pictures of your machine build and hearing of your progress.
