inconsistant cuts, THC, older version
« on: August 09, 2011, 10:46:16 AM »
I purchased a plasma table from Dyna CNC (now out of business) several years ago using Mach 3 version D1.90.026. I am at wits end trying to get a consistent cut. I do not think torch height control has worked from the beginning. One of the problems I am currently having is SOMETIMES at the end of a cut when the torch should go up to "safe height" then travel to the next cut it does not go up, it travels to the next cut dragging on the metal then tries to go down and crashes (limit switch on z axis). Another is sometimes while cutting just fine suddenly the cut will not go all the way through for a short distance (maybe an inch or two) then it will penetrate and do ok after.

I was wondering if maybe going to a newer version some of these intermittent problems might go away? Can I install a newer version and see if it works with my machine? The version I am using is registered to Dynamic Plastic #061001, do I need to purchase a new version or is this upgradeable?

Many questions I know but I just do not know where to turn for help or what to even ask for.

Upgrading the Mach sofware will NOT help your machine BEHAVE better. Most of what you describe is a function of Gcode programming and  machine setup.

Your torch dragging senario is a lost steps problem. That is a machine hardware OR machine setup problem. The ignoring commands can be an improperly written macro that provides a function.

IF you can accurately describe the system perhaps someone here can help out.  What brand THC controll does it have? Type of drives and rail system? .etc,etc.

When the torch fails to raise up and "drags" to the next cut can not be a g code issue because it is inconsistent. I am cutting the same part (50 pcs per sheet) and most of the time it works fine but sometimes it just fails to raise up (not at the same place) when it goes to another cut. If it was a g code issue then it would always do it at the same point but that is not the case.

My problem is I know very little, the company I purchased the machine went out of business shortly after I purchased it so I can not get information from them. I do know the drives are Gecko drives, servo motors but that is about all I know.

If the DRO in mach shows the torch rising when it happens, it's a mechanical issue. Upgrading the software wil not help.
I'd start by looking very closely at the ZAxis to see if there is a mechanical problem there.

I would suggest that you find a qualified TECH in your area that could go over the machine and check it out for you. At least he could write down what items are in use on your machine such as THC make and model, drives and motors. AND check the setup for the motor parameters, Check for binding on the Z axis ,Check the % of rapid setting on the THC controls, Check the Zheight switchfunction,  LOOK for noisy wiring configurations and ground loops ,etc, etc
