Why is the tool length important to mach3?

Why is the tool length important to mach3? When you jog down to the work piece and Zero the Z axis it knows were the tip of the tool is. The only thing I can think of is that when you are using multiple tools, you don't have to re-zero after each change. Am I right?

Yes thats correct. On the Bridgeport I never set an offset but on the beaver mill I do. I have a tool setter for the Beaver and load all the tools ready for a job and the setter enters the offsets in the table for me. The Bridgeport I just zero each tool as I put it in so no need for offsets..
