Smoothstepper jogging - bug ! with external switches
« on: December 28, 2010, 09:27:30 AM »
SS apparently wont jog correctly with external buttons !

Ie if I assign an external button, eg. /Ports & pins/Input Signals/ OEMTRIG #3, port #1, pin # 13
the  jog starts but wont stop until another jog key (of the same axis) is hit.
The OEMcode I was using was
308 Jog X-- (Oemtrig #3, Port1, #14)
307 Jog X ++ (Oemtrig #3, Port1, #14)

Notes/tests to confirm:
If I go to a PP only operation, the problem does not exist.
Keyboard jog works correctly.

Is my OEMCode wrong ?
I found Hoods list of oemcodes, excel and PDF versions, but they all only mention 307/308 for jogging x +/-.

Is there a workaround still using external buttons ?

data below
--------------------------
HW:
HW buttons physically wired to the SS
SS with CNC4PC SS interface bob, C25, rev 1.1
Button presses work in SS data monitoring, and I can see button signals go up/down.
Changing buttons or ports makes no difference.

SW:
Newest current mach, 3.043.22
downloaded sat. 25.12.2010.

SS plugins:
Plugin: Smoothstepper_Beta2_v015ogx2
Plugin: Beta2 Ver 0.016bd
Both plugins have the same error, the first one is the current one as of today, 28/12/2010.

More SW:
Windows XP, SP2, no PC problems.
Mach runs faithfully.

Set the Jog X ++ etc settings in Machs Ports and Pins, Inputs to the port and pin number rather than going through OEM Triggers. Never tried it as I dont use Jog keys but thats what they are for, so should work.

Oh and BTW I am surprised it worked via the PP using oem triggers as I have seen many mention the continued motion when doing it that way.

This is a good idea, but does not work, IF using a SS.

I tried it, and they definitely used to work with the parallel port, but the same error happens as with OEMCodes 307 and 308.
The jog takes off, and keeps on going until a jog key for the same axis is hit.

This is thus classified as a SS bug, IMO.

Any idea on a way to get jogging going, quickly ...
I may get a pokeys and use that, but it will take time to arrive.
My main concern is adding yet another piece of kit with various interdependencies.

Do you know anyone to ask ?
I sent this to the mach2/3 groups on yahoo as well.

Any idea if Warp9 is having any success with the SS, and they might help ?
WRT the SS plugins, expectations and hopes for me are a bit low re Greg and Warp9.

What do you use for jogging, BTW ?

I use a MPG for jogging, much prefer it, wind fast or slow and axis jogs fast or slow, switch to multi step mode and each click of the MPG will move the exact amount you have set the increment to.
I have a rotary switch that operates a Brain. One position is for continuous mode one is for multi step with 0.01mm increments, next is multistep with 0.1mm inc and lastly multistep with 1mm inc.
I find I only ever use the continuous and 0.01 multistep mode.

Regards the SS, never tried the jogging KEYS as I said but as you have issues then I suppose it is not working, is this a bug or just that its not its not implemented? I would say the latter ;)

You could email Greg and see what he says, I believe he responds to hundreds of support emails weekly and thus hardly has time to get on the forums, so it would be your best avenue for correspondence I would think.

I have just tried the jogging here via the jog inputs and it works perfectly for me, did you have the active state correct? ie active Low if using a normally open switch.

YES !

You DA MAN.

I humbly apologise, the error was all mine, as I did not have the active low setup correctly.
Of course, the plugin did nothing until a jog was triggered, and of course the next jog reversed it ... DUH.

Thank You, a great deal,
This was a great save for me.

Great catch.
Gotta keep installing threading sensor wiring next ....
