newbie with x y directional problem

I am thrilled to have made it this far with my bench top.
I am using a g540 drive and step drivers.

My problem is when I use the hot keys to jog the table in the x and y axis, it only goes one way. 
The DRO shows it moving correctly in both. (i.e. + and -)
When I did the MDI tutorial  (pages 3-5 in manual) to make a square movement the screen shows the movement in all 4 directions but the table only moves x in one direction and y in only one direction.

I have tried to search here but could not find this exact issue.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds like you dont have the Dir pins set correctly in Ports and Pins, either that or your parallel port cable is bad.

I swapped out the cord, no change.

What do you suggest on the ports?

Can you attach the xml for the profile you use.
If you use the standard Mach3 Mill then the xml will be called Mach3Mill.xml, if you use a custom profile it will have the name of that. You will find it in the Mach3 folder and you will need to copy it to your desktop and rename before the forum will accept it, suggest renaming to vz58.xml.
To attach to the forum use the additional options tab on the reply page and browse to the desktop and attach the xml.

the pins were wrong on Dir x+ y

they were set at
6 and 8

and should have been
3 and 5
