Are there any standard configurations recommended? I mean for the assignment of ports/pins to a function. I would like to get my project started right from the beginning.

THere is with some of the breakout boards.. if you get one of bob's boards it will tell you what to hook to every pin. Other then that you can hook up about any way you like
