New easy way to terminate G540 stepper cables
« on: January 21, 2010, 05:21:30 AM »
Owning to feedback from some of my customers I came up with a new way to terminate the stepper cable wires to the DB9 connectors used on the G540: http://soigeneris.com/gecko.aspx. Five solder pads are provided on the board four for the stepper connection and the center one is for the shield braid. There is also a small 5K pot on board so you can adjust it to program your motors current setting and not have to fuss with soldering to the DB9 or finding the correct resistor. The best thing is that the whole board fits in a standard DB9 shell!

I’ve been shipping these for a few months now just by word of mouth but have not been promoting them or had them up on the website. They ship as a complete set of four, with the shells and all.

Thanks,
Happy machining , Jeff Birt

I had not thought about a dip switch and resistor array, good idea! There is more than one way to skin a cat (as we yanks say.)

Neat products guys.
Peter, can't find yours on your site.
Did you get them done ?

......and I really like this part,

"I'm hoping it will help those who have trouble working out which is the hot end of a soldering iron".

Nope, there not on the site. I'm not sure that there is a lot of interest in them. I guess I could get some done.

Cheers,

Peter.

I got these recently and they definitely made soldering up the wires easier and setting the resistance.  I took Jeff's suggestion (via email) and put a dab of fingernail polish on the top of the trim pot to make sure that they would not get out of adjustment in the future.

The only quibble that I have on these, and it is a minor one, is that they come with the back shells.  The Gecko G540 already comes with the back shells, so I have a bunch of extras now.  I'd have rather saved a bit of money and not had the excess parts.

I think it winds up being more a question of who has the big unused pile of scrap shells rather than saving money!

Cheers,
