« on: March 08, 2009, 04:56:51 PM »
Hello guys,
Anyone here has some experience working with shredders for metal?
Im really interested in some of its key characteristics.
Please let me know if anyone knows anything about them.

Best regards
Fernando

I saw an automobile shreader recently on TV. It was basically a large hammer mill. The hammers weighed 800 lbs. each.
Brutal piece of equipment.

There is a lot of shredder footage on the internet on shredders, from aluminum cans, to boats and automobiles.

I was looking for information on something that could chew up scrap sheet metal.
I was kind of trying to figure out the RPM of the hammers, the material of the hamers, how are the hammers held in place once they are slid in the Hex shaft.... stuff like that.

its really impressive to see them work.

In the UK they call these machines fragmentation plants. They usually have 4 hammers (which are bell shaped in section) which are free to pivot within a central hub which is rotated by a motor (big motor). Underneath the hammer assembly is a grille of about 100mm mesh and everything that is placed in the hopper above gets smashed by the hammers until it drops through the grille.

The machines are usually conveyor belt fed from grab cranes and everything that goes in (cars that have been previously crushed into blocks - scrap etc.) comes out as scrolls of gray metal witch all looks exactly the same. Quite an amazing sight.

Tweakie,
Actually, the machine you just described is called a hammer mill, it does not work under the same principle of a shredder.

A shredder has 2 or 4 counter rotating shafts fitted if shear blades, instead of crushing the metal, it gets pinched between the blades and gets sheared.

watch that
