Question about MPGs and Encoder?

Hello,
in the Mach3 >  Settings > Ports and Pins > MPG Settings its possible to activate Encoders and MPGs. What is the diffrence between
using teh Encoders and MPGs. Its necessary to connect Axis to encoders or mpgs?
