I must be missing something here...

If the control box is on, it would make sense that the fan is on. When you turn the contol off, the fan should turn off. It's meant to work that way.

Most fans for years have had brushless motors that go on for ever (or the bearings wear out).  And fans are cheap.  Don't worry.
