Title: Mach Workshop at Cabin Fever Expo
Post by: Ron Ginger on September 27, 2008, 11:29:19 AM
ArtSoft USA is sponsoring a 3 day Mach workshop at the Cabin Fever Expo. This is a chance to get in depth technical information about Mach, meet Brian, Scott and other Mach users, and enjoy one of the best model engineering shows in the US.

The event is January 16, 17, 18, 2009 at York PA.  Everyone registered for the seminar is also registered for the expo. You can visit the several hundred exhibitors, or the nearly 200 vendors of tools, machinery, books, kits, plans, etc.

On Friday a major auction will be running with hundreds of items, including machines, tools, all kinds of shop equipment and  models. The seminar schedule has several breaks included so you can take advantage of both the expo and the seminar.

For details about Cabin Fever and the auction see http://cabinfeverexpo.com/

Seminars will start Friday at 9:00AM. the tentative agenda is as follows:

Friday
1) Mechanical Considerations. Stepper, servos, ballscrews, belts, pullies, etc
2) Electronics, BOBs, SS, Geckos, Power supplies, general wiring hints
3) Installing Mach and basic config, ports and pins, motor tuning, basic test and debug
4) General config, choosing the right answers.

Saturday
5) Basic Mach operation, loading programs, running, operator control, CV
6) Wizard Operation
7) Operator interfaces- Shuttle Pro, Xkeys, Ipac, PoKeys, MPGs, pendants, etc.
8) Customizing screens and macros.

Sunday
9) Other I/O options, modbus, PLCs, Brains, tool changers.
10) Plug-ins, using and writing.
11) Wrap up, feedback, next steps.

On Friday night there will be a social event at a nearby hotel, details to be arranged, but we are calling it 'pizza and beer time'

There will be a demo area for CNC machines, we will have at least a mini-mill with a tool changer, a lathe with a tool changer and a router. Other demos are welcome if any users want to bring along machines.

The Mach Workshop will require pre-registration and will be limited to 75 people. It will cost $50, including both the seminar and the Expo.  You can find the registration form at http://www.machsupport.com/cabinfever.php (Note: Please enter the City/State where you are from in the Comments field during checkout (for badges).  If paying for multiple people, please list the individual names and their City/State in the Comments field also).

Mark your calendar now and watch this topic for more details as they are developed.

Hi Len,

Beautiful area, you're in.

I now reside in Central Pennsylvania,  just out of Hershey. And yes it's true, when they're making chocolate, the whole area smells like it.

Unfortunately when they're not, because of all the farm land, it smells like cow$%^&  ;D

Ron,

The seminar sounds really interesting and I'm not too far away. Will the topics be  helpful to a total newbie or will they be too far over my head?

We are planning this session to help guys get started with Mach, so I hope we dont go over anyones head. We do plan to cover everything from basic mechanics to writing plug-ins, so some of the more advanced sessions may not be as useful to the new guys. We will start at the beginning on Friday morning, and get deeper each session.

So do any of you know which day(s) you'll be attending? I want to go on Friday as I'm not sure I'll be able to make it on Saturday.

Just out of curiosity, how long do the seminars last? For instance, here's Fridays agenda:

Friday
1) Mechanical Considerations. Stepper, servos, ballscrews, belts, pullies, etc
2) Electronics, BOBs, SS, Geckos, Power supplies, general wiring hints
3) Installing Mach and basic config, ports and pins, motor tuning, basic test and debug
4) General config, choosing the right answers.

It starts at 9:00 and then it goes until??

I'm wondering too Dave.

"On Friday a major auction will be running with hundreds of items, including machines, tools, all kinds of shop equipment and  models. The seminar schedule has several breaks included so you can take advantage of both the expo and the seminar."

I'd like to participate in the auction as well.

Maybe Ron will fill us in soon.

I don't know the schedule but if it's anything like Galesburg, you will want to be there every day. Lots of good seminars filled with good people and impossible to cover it all. The until part is hard to nail down too. Some days in Galesburg teaching was happening past 9 PM.

I expect the seminars will be about like the tentative schedule we put up earlier, but we will likely shift things a bit as we get closer to the time and maybe pickup another speaker or two.

I do expect it to be busy all 3 days- I hope we can have about 4 daily session of 1 1/2 hour with about 30 min between sessions to do a walk around the show. There will be a lot happening.

Im sure there will be some guys that cant get there for Friday, but I did not think we could do justice to all we want to cover in just 2 days.  Lots to do, we will do our best to cover everything.

Well I would like to know if anyone would like to CarPool up there. Barring unforseen complications, I have registered to be there as well and look forward to seeing all the guys I haven't in a long while.

I live close to Knoxville, TN and I am taking all Hwy up to York, PA, if anyone is along the route and wants to share the expenses for the Ride, Pipe up!! Email me at:  PoppaBear"at"Hughes.net  and let me know if you wanna pile up and go...

I have a Ford Focus, can seat 2 Big guys and 2 little guys for the back seats (small back seats). If more than two, you gonna have to pack light, like an overnight bag and your laptop........

Looking forward to seeing all of you that go, I will be easy to spot, kinda look like a cross between a Sasquatch  and a Shaved Wookie.

I'm thinking of going.  I live in San Jose, CA.  I can get a flight into Philadelphia for about $225 (the hotel will be the biggest expense).  It looks like I will rent a car.  Google maps indicates it's a 2 hour drive from there.  Does two round reasonable for that time of year?

You might also check Harrisburg PA- thats barely an hour drive, but maybe not good flights from CA. Also check Baltimore, its south, closer, and better Freeway connections.

VINCE,
I assume you mean a 2 hour drive from Phil airport to the show, i would figure 2 1/2 hrs. depends on the time of day and weather. I would also check Baltimore, figure the equivilant in driving time, but if the flight is cheaper go for it. BTW, dress appropriately, no Spido's as it will be cold. ;)

I signed up for the workshop and bought a round trip ticket to Baltimore.  I looked up rental car prices and they are pretty steep, more than $100 a day from BWI.  Any suggestions on a cheaper rental car?

Haven't leased a car in over two years but that sounds expensive. No way of getting a corporate rate, ARP, Credit Union
group rate? How about a truck or van from Enterprise as sometimes you can get a nice three day rental price.

I found if I fly a private plane to the general aviation terminal (1 mile away from the commercial terminal) I can get the same car for $40 a day.  I do own a plane so I will see if I can take a taxi over to the GA terminal and get them to rent me a car for $40.

Unfortunately, it would cost about 8 times as much to fly my plane there from San Jose, CA. so I have to fly commercial.  That and it's pretty much a two day trip in a 177RG.

That was my next question......weather you had a Citation 10 or maybe a G5.

IFR rated or not, I'd have to plan a week each way this time of the year in a Cardinal.

I'm only an hour away with an Archer.

Hope to see you there,

I made a car reservation for a mid sized car for $40 a day including all fees except for gas.  I will have to pick it up at Signature Flight Support (a GA FBO).   I will just take a taxi from the commercial terminal to the FBO and pick up the car.  It's strange because Avis will have to deliver the car over to Signature for me to pick it up when I will be right next to the rental car lot at the commercial terminal.

I just talked to the show promoter, and he said the hotels are starting to get requests for rooms for the Inaugration- its almost a 3 hr drive to Washington DC!

I made room reservations at the Roadway Inn, about 1.5 miles from the fairgrounds for $47 a night.  With the money I saved I might be able to afford a new CNC4PC C23 card.

I'm in Groton, MA, just south of Nashua,NH. It's a 7 hour drive from here. Was wondering if anyone would like to meet up in MA & share a ride/driving?

N4NV,
I just booked at the Roadway, thanks for the tip.

BTW, Yahoo maps shows it as being 3.9 miles/13 minuites away. In case anyone else is interested, here's their info:

Roadway Inn York
(717) 843-8974
132 North George Street York, PA 17401

If you have TravelValuesPlus, book from the choice hotels website & TVP discounted rate is: $42.39/night!

Actually the Roadway Inn is 132 NORTH George Street and is only 1.5 miles (4 minutes) from the fairgrounds.  You must have put in the address of the Holiday Inn which is 3.9 miles from the Roadway.  The Roadway is actually closer to the fairgrounds than the Holiday Inn.  But, as the person at the front desk of the Holiday Inn enthusiastically tried to point out, the Holiday Inn has a pool.  For some reason, the thought of swimming in January in Pennsylvania does not sound very appealing (even if indoors).

Ahh, that explains it,  I did put the Holiday Inn into Yahoo, missunderstood where Cabin Fever was being held.
I've corrected the street. Blame Yahoo as they gave me the 'south'.

I'm still interested in sharing riding/driving(see earlier post) from MA.

Ok guys,

For those of the members which are living somewhere in the world but at least a few thousands miles away....
Is it possible that somebody makes some videos, photo's or else of the highlights which can be published on the web or here in this forum.
I,m sure that the members which are not so lucky to be there are very interested in this event!!

Kind regards,

I made it to the Rodeway Inn in York after the normal problems with commercial aviation, but the price was right.  Do we just show up at the show and say we already paid and registered though the mach seminar?

Yep, just come into the main entrance, they should have a list of everyone registered. They will open at 9:00.

I arrived mid-day, unloaded my boat, but could not unload the cnc lathe. We did get Brians crates of the truck, but cannot unpack until Friday AM. We will likely be a little slow getting started tomorrow, but should be fine the rest of the days.

Things got off to a slow start this morning because they would not let Ron and Brian unload until today.  By 10:00 things picked up.   I learned something today that made the entire trip worth it.  I found there was a peck drill pull back setting in mach.  Mine was set for .1".  I always wondered why my mill would pull up so far when peck drilling.

The temperature in San Jose, CA yesterday was 75 degrees.  Today in York it was 12 degrees F on the drive to the show and 16 degrees on the drive home.  The wind was blowing about 10 mph so I would imagine it was close to single digits with the wind chill factor.  Not very warm for a Californian (no wonder my parents moved from PA when I was a child).

When I get home I will write up more of what I got from the seminar.  As a CNC guy who uses servos, I felt like the red headed stepchild with all the stepper guys around.

I attached a picture of the seminar with Brian in the front and Ron off to the side making a point.

We were not able to get the manual printed for a reasonable price. Id still like to see it happen, but It doesnt look good. You might try a place like Staples or Kinkos, I have had multi hundred page docs printed and bound.

To change the peck drill pull back value goto the ports and pins menu, choose mill options.  In the lower right you will see G73 Pullback.

Oh no, I did sell the steam boat but I did NOT buy the fire engine. This was about reducing the toy collection, not adding to it. I didn't even buy any new tools this year.

The Dusenberg model in the photo above is a fully functional model- that means a working engine, transmission, etc. It has to be seen to believe.

It was a great weekend, I hope everyone there enjoyed it as much as  I did.  We had a good group of guys in the seminar, the visitors seemed to enjoy watching the demo machines run.

Thanks to Dave Cole, Scott Schaffer and Tom Hubin for adding their experience in the seminars, and to everyone that attended.

Great pic. I've seen this car about 4 years ago at a show in Detroit, when he only had a chassis and running gear.
What a beautiful piece. A friend of mine has a real one and is reproducing the heads.

Ed,
Been going to that show since the first one. There is always someone who has done something outstanding.
Although we look and admire, sometimes we forget about  what it takes to do that kind of stuff. All of the
exhibitors are realy great people and if you ask they are more than happy to share. Never went to the one
in Detroit but heard it was the grandaddy of them all. I didn't have time to talk to the guy. I have seen a
working scale model of a Harley Davidson motorcycle. One guy made a grinding machine  for cams and out of some
110 he only got 2 or three, then the valves with .013" stems had to still take the 160 psi compression.
It took him 4 or 5 years to do that airplane engine. Neat stuff, all you need is time and a love of doing what
what you find enjoyable.
Unfortunately, manny of those folks are getting up in age and the new generation
are more attracted to other things. That's why when i am reincarnated i too will be more attracted to those
other things ( not that i missed much ) just want to do it better the first time around.  >:D

Rich,

When I went to the show in Detroit 4 years ago, I bought plans for 4 different models, One being a 9 cyl radial airplane engine,
Haven't started on any of them yet.  I was just envious of the time and patients these people spent on these projects. Being in this trade for 50 years you realize what it takes.  Its a lot easier working on full size projects, and still have to wear magnifiers to see what your doing.
Would have loved to attended Cabin Fever show this year, just for the sake of meeting you and all the other great people on this Forum.
I will keep it on the agenda for the next one. Being retired , and the days still aren't long enough. But then , the extra cash from some paying jobs always comes in handy.  :D

 Later ,
Ed

Another thing I learned at the seminar was the Calibrate Spindle function.  I told Brian that now I have an index pulse on my mill spindle, I can see that it runs a little off of that I command.  He said in the Function Cfg's menu there was a calibrate spindle wizard that would correct for non linearity on my spindle controller.  I just got home and ran it.  Now instead of being off by about 100 RPM, the wizard made it off by 200 rpm and cut my max speed in half!  I can't even find where to change it back.  I will send a copy of this to Brian to see what he can tell me.  For now I would suggest not to run the wizard.

BTW, it's 73 degrees in San Jose today.  I don't think it got above 60 in the conference room. (Give me 100 degrees over 32 any day).

I tell you what, Those guys who build that stuff are so good it is scary!! Even on my best day, I could not even come within the same zip code even WITH a CNC machine to the quality of work/attention to detail those guys where doing.

One guy had a Running 1/4 scale Hemi V-8 with Drag Pipes, it was beyond cool..........

These guys were defenitly for Americas Greatest Generation!!

It was good to put some faces to names there as well.

Dave and I, made MAJOR scores at the "Flea" market, we found Pnumatic valves on Manfolds blocks 2-3 per block for only 5 DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!  and it was SMC.  Dave and I cornered the guy again on Sunday, and brought a hole pile of stuff from him.

It was good to see Brian, Graham, Scott N., Brett again, and to finally Meet Dave, "Overloaded", Paul, and a few others that my crappy memeory cant remember......

There really just wasnt enough time to cover some of the subjects to the depth they needed........

That pretty much sums it up for me as well Scott. I will add a little story. A young guy came up to our booth wanting to know how to learn how to write g-code. Graham gave him the name of a book or two and we started explaining it to him. Graham is the hands down G-code Guru for those of you who may not know. Any way, we talked to him a bit and then Graham walked him thru a simple demo program we had running. He explained every line and every command to him. We then told him to have a seat and let him run the program in single block mode watching the machine and seeing for hisself how each line made the machine act. That was worth the trip. Everything else was iceing on the cake IMO.  :) I meant to take a gamepad to try to stir intrest in the youger group but I forgot it.  :( . So many these days only have intrest in games and I'm hopeing that will add a little appeal. In my shop any kid I have ever shown my mill to really perks up when they see me jog it around with a gamepad. I would consider it a favor if someone will remind me next time I get to go.

scott,
Glad you were buying valves, since i was drawer tool dumping and buying carbide end mills by the pound.
5 ( 1/2" ) out of the ten were new and name brand. $12.00

I must say that the seminar was very good and happy that i came back on Sunday for the PLC stuff.
Don't think any body in that room could get the info presented anywhere for the price. Also didn't notice anyone sleeping at any time. No matter who you were there was something to be learned.

Mostly need to thank the presenters for their efforts. Like you said Scott, a lot of material, and for each topic there
are books written.

I walked away with some loot also:
8"x18" CNC ready machine.

I paid a lot less than asking price.

These machines were not properly protected on the overseas trip so they
have some rust scattered about.  Dealer just wanted to unload rather than
sell a "blem" machine.  The rust spots cleaned up nice.

They come ready for servos and controller.
Also supplied is a second set of ballscrews and thrust bearings to replace
the ones on the machine that have some rust spots.

Spindle motor is 3/4 hp inverter duty.  2000 rpm spindle.

The hole on the left accepts a 15" monitor.  It looks like the whole
control can easily be incorporated into the cabinet.  The dealers machine
had a huge electronics cabinet on back.

Toolpost has a 3 phase motor to rotate it.  Also has a position sensor.
Figuring out how to make that work will probably be the biggest problem
in this retrofit.

It would be something to bring this machine back next year and have it
banging out parts running Mach, while it sits next to their $14,000 machine.

Have to finish my latest 4 axis mill first....

Scott

We have not settled on an exact plan, but I do not think we will do a full Mach seminar as last year. There will be at least a couple of 1 hr seminars, and I will be running a demo of some kind.

Note the CNC workshop that was held in Illinois has been re-created, and wlil be in Ann Arbor (outside Detroit) Michigan in June 2010. That will be a full week long event and Im sure there will be a lot of Mach sessions. Its all in early planning stages now
