BLOWN DRIVE BOARD
«
on:
November 01, 2011, 04:51:10 AM »
Goodmorning
As a new entrant to Mach 3 I have a query.
One of my motors (X AXIS) shorted internally (checked by an expert, not me) and blew the x axis chip when in motion.
Is there any way to protect the board from such a thing occuring again?
Many thanks
Graham

Grayham,
First step is to know what caused the problem in the first place. Then one could see what if anything could be done to prevent it from happening again.
Best bet would be to ask the seller of the drive.

Hi Graham,
It has to be an extremely poor quality motor to short internally so best check all your motors and wiring.
It would not be practical to try and protect an existing driver against short or sudden open circuit but Gecko (I think) make a drive which is almost destruction proof if you are desperate, but they are not cheap.

Hi Graham,
The motors are of Chinese manufacture and quality is unknown.

They appear to be 2.8 Amps per phase perhaps a good idea to check that you are not exceeding this.
