Question about db25 hookup
« on: December 18, 2008, 12:31:58 PM »
Hello my question is should I hook up my StepGenie IC diy board to my pc, because I am reading 5v coming out of the step input and dir input. I hate to sound so noobish but we all have to start somewhere. I did ground the inputs to see what will happen and I got motion from the stepper. But before I go ahead and break my pc I wanted to check here.

Not sure what you are meaning, the Step and Dir are OutPuts.

Hi, Tweeter

Your printer port uses 5 volts & 0 volts to send or receive data, If your board inputs are floating at 5 volts, Then by grounding/pulsing them you'll get movement.

That's why Mach3 has Step/Direction  "Low Active" settings in Config, Ports & Pins, Motor Outputs, You can select.

The only precaution is that your Printer port should have No More than 5 volts applied to it, Grounding or 5 volts applied to it is Normal.

Hope this Helps, Chip

Thanks for the help guys. I never hooked anything on a printer port I was thinking better to sound stupid than kill a 1000.00 dollar pc. Thanks again
