Poor Graphics
« on: September 21, 2008, 07:36:55 AM »
Hello,
I just purchased a used PC solely for Mach.
The Mach graphics are really poor and will only allow 800x600 resolution to be selected.

Is this a limitation of the on-board graphics ?

Is there anything I can do to improve the display ?

Do I need to buy a graphics card ?

Other than that, I works fine.
Thanks,
RC

What pc did you buy, RC?

Possibly some more info about it?

Could it be possible that the on-boards graphics driver is not loaded?

Adding to daves suggestion, have you rebooted since loading the OS or graphics drivers? sometimes the graphics wont be enabled properly until a reboot .
Also look in the BIOS there could be settings there for amount of memory etc allocated to the onboard graphics.

It's a generic is what the guy told me. He had a pile of them from a big office upgrade or something.
It has :  Intel (R)
           Celeron (R)   CPU 2.0 GHz
           512 RAM (480)
2- HDD's  10G and 20G
Only PCI is an Ethernet card.
What else do I need to look for ?
Thanks Dave,
RC

Have a look inside on the mobo you will probably find a make and model number on it.
Best thing to do is probably wipe it anyway and install a fresh OS, well that is if you are goiing to be using on a machine, no telling what crap the Office IT guys put on it ;D

Dave- Hood, I found a User Guide inside.
ASUS  P4SP-MX Motherboard

"Onboard VGA Shared Memory Size"  ? ? is this what you are referring to ?

When booting up, there is a black DOS looking screen for a few esconds..if that is the BIOS, how do I make it stay so I can look it over ?

When booting keep tapping the Del key, that should get you into the BIOS, some others have a different key, sometimes F1 or F2 but usually it will tell you at the bottom of the POST screen. If it goes too fast to read try hitting the pause key on your keyboard, sometimes its hard to time that right though LOL

Here's the downloads for your motherboard. Unfortunately they don't give you a direct link as you have to go through the 3 menus.

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

Select:

Motherboard, then Socket 478, then P4SP-MX.

I would grab the latest drivers and download them and then go into device manager and go under the video section and update the driver you just downloaded.

Thanks Men,
There was no driver loaded at all.
Also stumbled upon a CD for the mobo in the back of the case. I muddled through, making what appeared to be the most logical selections, and guess I picked the right file. Put it on a flash drive then into the new PC and WHAAAAA LAAAAAA.
The image is now sharp enough to slice bread.
Your help and assistance has been most excellent,(as usual)
thanks again,
RC
