Can't get Mach 4 to run
« on: January 09, 2025, 10:11:36 AM »
I have an old Vista computer on my CNC mill in the garage and I am having a nightmare of a time getting Mach 4 to run on it.  It's been running Mach 3 for several years.

The Smooth Stepper people say to use build 4809 with their ESS 283 plugin, which I downloaded from their site.  After Mach 4 reported successful installation, it says it can't run because it can't find api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll.  After burning disks (disk emulator programs would not run on that computer) and installing SP1, SP2 and update KB2999226, it finally got past that error.

Now I get 'entry point MFEnumDeviceSources could not be found in MF.dll'.  I re-installed direct X to get a new MF.dll and that did not help.

Now I don't know what to do.  Ideas anyone?

While waiting for someone to answer my question, I decided to try a newer build of Mach 4.  I installed build 5382.  I won't run either.  I get the message, 'procedure entry point RegisterTouchWindow not found in USER32.dll.

Are these errors caused by a problem within Vista?

Do you have a Win10 PC?  I suggest you try Mach4 on that with your ESS to check it will run and consider upgrading the workshop machine.

"MFEnumDeviceSources could not be found in MF.dll" simply means that function does not exist in that version of Windows.

Build 4075 is about the last build that will run on anything older than Windows 7 (XP, Vista). And Windows 7 support dropped soon after.  So upgrading to Windows 10 is probably your best bet.  It all has to do with API changes from Microsoft and wxWidgets.

I thought Vista being too old might be the problem.  I do have my last Win 8.1 computer intact and available.  I'm in the process of restoring win 10, which I had tried and rolled back.  It will do to try Mach 4 and see if I can get the Auto Tool Zero to work right on my mill.  No one seems to know why it won't work reliably on Mach 3 for me.  If the ATZ works well, I may have to think about leaving that computer out there (in the garage).
