Super gearbox oil required
« on: March 16, 2010, 10:26:03 PM »
Hi, I have a milling machine which is only a couple of years old of chinese manufacture. Since I've owned it the gearbox makes a racket like shaking a tin can full of bolts vigerously. Whilst i'm standing near it I have to use ear defenders to protect my sanity.

Does anyone know of an oil I can obtain in the UK which will quieten the racket down a fair bit.

Cheers
John

Could you perhaps post a picture so we could identify the machine ?.

Hi John,

I have never actually seen one of these machines so not much help really.

These are sold as 'Model T' by Chester Machine Tools in the UK http://www.chesteruk.net/showrooms.htm If you live close to one of their showrooms it may be worth paying them a visit and asking for their suggestions if nothing is forthcoming on the forum (Hood should know the solution) .

Stupid suggestion but you could always go for the belt drive head. :(

Hi Tweakie, Not a stupid idea, now I've converted to cnc I find that 1750rpm is way too slow. Trouble is that it has a 2 speed 380v 3ph motor so buying an inverter is going to cost a fair bit.

Just had a look at the model T Chester does, It does look very similar but has many differences, and luckily I didn't pay any way near that kind of price for it. I'll give them a ring to see what they suggest with the oil.

Cheers
John
