Mach 3 and MSD880 microstep driver settings
« on: February 02, 2017, 03:07:53 AM »
Hi all just building my first CNC setup so maybe some stupid questions:
first try with moving all axles all motor`s become very hot setup changes current down now seems ok

Mach 3 not tuned fully yet
MSD880 microstep drives for all 3 axle
and Motor type  FL86STH156-4208A-H coils in serial
set at dynamic current setting 3.5amp microsteps set to3200 not sure if that is good or ?
in mach 3 not sure what "mode" under ports and pins will be correct MAX CL mode or one of other ways?
when jogging x or y or z the motors sometimes stopps fully and on mach 3 it looks like they are moving and a 200mm move is only about 2mm so need some guidiance what and where to adjust

thanks in advance

There is little point in setting your microsteps as high as 3200.

My recommendation would be that if you are Metric then use 1/10th microstepping (2000) or if you are Imperial use 1/8th microstepping (1600).

If you are using the Parallel Port then select that (do not use Max NC Mode), also set Kernel Speed to 25000Hz. If you are not using the parallel port but using a motion controller then which type ?

For distance calibration, initially, make sure you are setting-up Mach3 in the Units (Inch/mm) you intend to use (Config. / Set Native Units).
In Members documents there is a calculator for finding Steps per Unit and also a math's example.

There is also an automatic Axis Calibration feature on the Mach3 (Alt-6) Settings page.

Hope this helps,

i am using an usb controller like this one https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/USB-port-cnc-4-axis-mach3-motion-controller-kit-control-card-board/809304_32436122332.html

and system is set for mm
have home sensor on all 3 axis and end switch both end on all 3 axis

problems to get movement when cal motor movement

Hi all

finally i got all 3 axis moving when i use jog so that seems to be ok but want to cal movement so under call told system to move x axis 100mm nothing happens what can be reason same goes for y and z axis
setup mach 3 and usb interfase to mach 3 https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/USB-port-cnc-4-axis-mach3-motion-controller-kit-control-card-board/809304_32436122332.html
Step driver msd880 set to 51200 microsteps/rev for the motor othervice distance totally off and motors nor running smooth
Motor type  FL86STH156-4208A-H coils in serial
x and y with tooth wheel on so 20teets on motor and 40teets on shaft z direct connected

So you have a 2:1 reduction geared X and Y axis (20t on motor and 40t on shaft) but what is the shaft ?

Please refer to Sections 5.4 / 5.5... of the Mach3 manual which details steps per unit calculation.
