I'm not looking to create anything incredibly accurate, just a machine that moves in very small increments with decent repeatability and accuracy.

What those .00002" movements turn out to be in reality is a whole other matter.

If that makes you happy then great.

BUT

I don't know of what value the dro readout is if the value does not relate to
reliable and repeatable axis movement.You can fool the machine system, fool yourself,fool the program, but after testing the reality of it all will put things into perspective.

Accuracy comes from the mechanics of the system, microstepping a stepper provides smoother movement with accuracy as already addressed, and additionaly
all the other factors ( ie; operating conditions, etc ) apply also.
