Mach3 will run on 32 or 64 bit BUT.... the Printer Port driver will only run on 32 bit, but, I dont think the Paraport driver even then works on W8.

Mach4, Art has made a Printer port driver called Darwin but agian, it only works on 32 bit.......and I am not sure of its status on W8, perhaps someone else who runs it can chime in here.
Mach4 will run on 32/64 W8, but you will need a plugin to run a external motion board.

"also any tips on someone who just got their first CNC machine?"

It is worth your time, to take some Night School machining classes (see if they do CNC), to learn about how to fool with them.
It is much cheaper to make mistakes in school as opposed to your own machine and tools... hehehe

I've been away from my machine and this forum for awhile. A lot has happened.
A few questions, I hope this is the right spot for the answers.
I have a home built CNC mill running MACH 3 and an old parralell port PC. I have no problem upgrading to MACH 4, but what all do I have to do? I'm not sure if I can change my driver box from parralel port to what, USB?
How much work to tune my machine, end stops, etc... to MACH 4 form MACH 3 info?
Is Darwin the laser cutting software or is it the name for MACH 4?
Does MACH 3 have laser cutting software?
My goal is to use my CNC machine, I will upgrade PC if needed, dont want to make new driver box for non parralel if not needed, I will buy MACH 4 if needed, I want to add to milling a laser for cutting.
Thanks.
